SK Telecom Secures Horizon Europe Funding for Quantum Key Distribution Project

According to SK Telecom, the South Korean telecom operator has secured Horizon Europe research funding for a three-year quantum key distribution (QKD) system project using photonic integrated circuits and AI. The company said it is the first Asian private entity to receive the program's support for quantum cryptography research. SK Telecom will develop the PIC-based QKD system and build a testbed, partnering with Greece's National Centre of Scientific Research Demokritos, Austria's Institute of Technology, German semiconductor startup Synogate UG, and South Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The project aims to miniaturize QKD hardware and enhance system stability through AI-based real-time calibration.
