According to reports on May 11, U.S. President Trump backed Iraqi businessman Ali AlZaidi as a leading candidate for Iraq’s next prime minister and invited him to visit Washington. The White House conditioned its support on AlZaidi distancing from Iran-backed militias and weakening Tehran’s influence in Baghdad. The U.S. Treasury Department previously sanctioned AlZaidi’s bank in 2024, prohibiting dollar transactions due to suspected ties to a militia leader affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
