According to Turkish sources, Turkey proposed building a $1.2 billion military fuel pipeline from Turkey to Romania on May 15 to help meet energy needs of NATO’s Eastern European members. The proposed route would cost roughly one-fifth of alternative options—such as routes through Greece or Romania’s western neighbors—which rely on maritime transport and are more vulnerable to disruption. The proposal comes as Turkey prepares to host NATO’s July summit, where a decision on the initiative may be made.
