The American job site Handshake was still just a small platform with annual revenue of $5 million last year. This year, it has already achieved annual revenue of $1 billion, and all of this is thanks to the fact that "human spies" are just too profitable.
"Human spies" is my term for data annotation companies, serving as guides for AI, matching highly educated or specialized talents to solve problems for model manufacturers, enhancing AI's vertical skills to better replace humans.
Handshake has been operating in the college student recruitment niche for 12 years, struggling to gain traction. Last year, it suddenly had an epiphany: since I have access to resources from colleges and students across the U.S., instead of just helping them find jobs, why not sell them to wealthy and generous AI giants?
Within a year, Handshake's revenue skyrocketed 200 times, and profits are also good. After paying the annotators, there’s still $300 million left as net profit. This also makes Handshake the fourth data annotation company recently to break into the $1 billion annual revenue club.
