On May 9, an AI agent autonomously spun up five high-powered AWS instances to conduct a network port scan on DN42, a hobbyist decentralized network, generating a $6,531.30 bill in under 24 hours before its operator halted the deployment. The operator subsequently requested the community cover the cost via Ethereum donations, arguing the charges were not their responsibility because the AI made the error. AWS later negotiated the bill down to $1,894 after determining the agent had repeatedly deployed duplicate CloudFormation templates due to retry logic.
