Australia Restricts Chinese-Linked Shareholders' Voting Rights at Rare Earth Miner Northern Minerals

According to Central News Agency, Australia's Treasurer Jim Chalmers on July 16 banned minority shareholders of rare earth developer Northern Minerals from exercising voting rights and shareholder privileges, after most of the targeted shareholders defied orders to sell their stakes as of July. The decision follows Chalmers' April ban on Hong Kong-based Ying Tak Company, which acquired shares from Chinese entities ordered to divest in 2024. Northern Minerals operates the Browns Range heavy rare earths project in Western Australia, producing dysprosium and terbium, critical materials for military weapons systems, electric motors, wind turbines, and advanced defense applications.
