Bill Gates Adds Professional Athletes as Fourth Job Safe From AI, Says Most Other Roles Will Be Eliminated

Bill Gates recently added professional athletes to his list of jobs that will survive AI automation, bringing the total to four occupations he believes are safe from the technology's disruption. Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Gates explained: "Just like baseball, we won't want to see computers play baseball."

Gates previously identified programmers, biologists, and energy sector workers as roles that would remain necessary in an automated future. However, when pressed on whether humans will still be needed for most jobs, Gates gave a stark answer: "For the most part, no." He noted that while some work will remain for people, jobs in manufacturing, logistics, and agriculture will "basically be solved problems" over time. Microsoft's 2025 research found that roles with the highest AI overlap include interpreters and translators (98%), historians (91%), and mathematicians (91%).
