Claude Authors 80% of Anthropic's Production Code as of May 2026, Signaling Recursive Self-Improvement

According to Anthropic, Claude authored more than 80% of code merged into the company's production systems as of May 2026, an increase from low single-digit percentages before the in-house coding agent rolled out in February 2025. Anthropic engineers merged eight times as much code per day in Q2 2026 compared to 2024, with Claude handling the code writing while humans review and direct. The company's Mythos Preview model achieved a 52x speedup in code optimization by April 2026, compared to a 3x speedup for Claude Opus 4 in May 2025. Anthropic frames these gains as a possible path to recursive self-improvement, where AI systems could design and build their own successors.
