Ebola Outbreak in DRC Kills Nearly 800, Disrupts U.S.-Backed Mining Partnership Expansion

According to Reuters, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has killed approximately 800 people and is disrupting operations and negotiations related to a U.S.-backed mining partnership agreement. While current mining operations under the U.S.-DRC strategic partnership are not directly halted by isolation measures, logistics challenges and travel restrictions imposed to curb the outbreak have hindered staff mobility and delayed visits from suppliers, advisors, and investors.

Diplomatic officials and U.S. investment advisors indicated that these restrictions are impeding discussions to expand the scope of the partnership.
