Economist Warns Korean Retail Investors Trapped in Leveraged ETF 'Casino,' $10B Inflows Magnify Market Volatility

According to The Economist on July 24, the publication warned that Korean retail investors have become trapped in leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs), comparing the market to a casino as extreme speculation amplifies volatility. South Korean individuals have poured approximately $10 billion into leveraged ETFs this year, with daily rebalancing mechanisms forcing additional purchases on rallies and forced selling on declines, further destabilizing the market.

The weekly magazine noted that single-stock leveraged ETFs—such as those tracking Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix—carry substantially higher risks than diversified ETFs, as they magnify individual stock price movements by multiples. The Economist cautioned that even if financial regulators now regretted allowing these products, extracting Korean investors from this "attractive new investment" would prove difficult. The KOSPI index has surged nearly three-fold since early 2025 but has fallen approximately 25 percent since June.
