According to the Financial Times on May 8, European Union leaders are preparing for potential negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. European Council President Antonio Costa stated the EU sees “potential” in talks with Putin and has secured support from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Costa said he is discussing with 27 EU member state leaders to determine the best approach and identify key discussion points for negotiations when the time is appropriate. He noted that Zelensky invited EU members at last month’s summit in Cyprus to prepare and contribute positively to peace talks. Costa added that Brussels will “avoid interfering” with the process led by U.S. President Trump, while acknowledging the Kremlin has shown no indication Putin is willing to meet with any EU representatives.
