FERC Orders Faster Data Center Grid Connection on June 18; Power Demand to Hit 20% of U.S. Total by 2035

According to Reuters, on June 18, the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) required regional grid operators to expedite the interconnection of large electricity consumers such as data centers. FERC also stated it would no longer factor environmental considerations when establishing future rules. The U.S. currently operates over 4,000 data centers with additional facilities under planning or construction. Data center power consumption is projected to rise from approximately 5 percent of total U.S. electricity demand to roughly 20 percent by 2035, according to the Electric Power Research Institute.
