Google Study: Quantum Bits Needed to Break Bitcoin Drop 20-Fold, Q-Day Expected by 2029

According to CoinDesk, Google researchers have found that the number of physical quantum bits required to break Bitcoin's elliptic curve encryption has dropped 20-fold compared to previous estimates. The discovery has prompted multiple institutions to advance their expectations for Q-Day—the point at which quantum computers can break existing encryption systems—to 2029. However, Deutsche Digital Assets identified the real risk as not quantum technology itself, but governance speed: Bitcoin upgrades require 90% miner consensus, while traditional financial institutions need only board approval to migrate infrastructure. Experts also warned that quantum threats are not binary events; even if decryption takes months, the threat materializes as long as the attack completes while data remains valuable.
