Hong Kong Police Officers Jailed for 10 and 8 Years on Espionage Charges After Failed UK Abduction

Two Hong Kong and British nationals were jailed today (June 18) after being found guilty of spying for China. Peter Wai, 41, a former UK Border Force officer, was sentenced to 10 years, while retired Hong Kong police superintendent Bill Yuen, 66, received 8 years in prison at London's Old Bailey court.

Wai conducted surveillance operations on Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters and dissidents living in the UK on Yuen's orders. The pair were arrested following a failed attempt to abduct fraud suspect Monica Kwong from her home in West Yorkshire. Wai was also convicted of misconduct in public office for misusing government databases to gather intelligence on individuals of interest to Hong Kong authorities.
