Iran's Foreign Minister Backs Transit Fee Concept but Rejects Trump's 20% Strait Rate on July 13

According to Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on July 13, Iran supports the principle that entities providing security and stability in the Hormuz Strait should receive compensation for that service. However, Araghchi stated the 20% fee rate proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump is excessive, saying "Of course, 20% is too much. We will do it fairly." Araghchi emphasized on social media that "Iran has always been the guardian of the Hormuz Strait and will continue to be so forever." Trump announced on Truth Social that as the region's security provider, commercial vessels transiting the strategic waterway would be charged at a rate equivalent to 20% of cargo value. Araghchi's measured response appears to acknowledge the fee concept while implicitly criticizing Trump's specific rate.
