Gurugram-based eyewear retailer Lenskart outlined an AI-central strategy for FY27 in a shareholder letter, positioning artificial intelligence as the core driver for scaling customer acquisition and eye testing across its business. The company plans to deploy AI across stores, factories, and customer platforms to connect eye tests with product design, manufacturing, and delivery. Founder Peyush Bansal announced a target to raise eye tests to 100 million over the next few years, up from approximately 30 million currently. This expansion comes as Lenskart strengthens its position in India's eyewear retail market, where optometrist shortages remain a constraint across the region.

FY26 Financial Performance and Store Expansion

Lenskart added 603 net new stores in FY26, continuing its aggressive physical footprint growth. Fourth quarter revenue rose 46% to 25.2 billion rupees (US$260 million). However, profit fell to 2 billion rupees (US$21.1 million) due to one-time adjustments. The company also clarified that near-term revenue from its smart glasses business has not been included in its financial outlook.

AI Applications Across Existing Business

Lenskart already operates AI-powered remote eye tests in more than 500 stores, addressing the shortage of optometrists and eye care specialists across India and Asia. The company uses GeoIQ, an in-house AI tool, to estimate revenue at specific store locations, enabling site selection focused on shorter payback periods. On its app, AI-driven features such as virtual try-on have contributed to digital influence on purchasing decisions—45% of Lenskart's sales in India are now digitally influenced.

Smart Glasses and In-House Manufacturing Model

Lenskart designs and manufactures its own eyewear products, maintaining tight control over margins and supply chain operations. In H1 FY26, the company produced 3.9 million frames and 2.6 million lenses at its own facilities. The company is extending this vertical integration model to consumer electronics through "B by Lenskart Smart Glasses," developed with in-house hardware, software, and app development capabilities using Google's Gemini AI platform. Launch is planned by March 2026.
