London Stock Exchange Announces LSE 24 Trading Venue for Digital Markets

The London Stock Exchange announced Tuesday the launch of LSE 24, a new 24/5 trading venue designed to support digital, algorithmic and agent-based trading. The venue will operate from 17:00 to 07:50 Monday through Friday with a 30-minute pause each evening for end-of-day processing, running separately from the Main Market's existing 08:00 to 16:30 hours. The announcement comes as exchanges globally expand trading hours, with the New York Stock Exchange having won preliminary regulatory approval for a 22-hour trading day.

LSE 24 Operates 17:00 to 07:50 with 2027 ETP Launch Target

LSE 24 will be available for client testing by the end of 2026, with exchange-traded products launching as the first asset class in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approval. The exchange intends to expand the venue into equities as a next step, drawing on central limit order book and request-for-quote functionality to support price transparency and on-demand liquidity.

"The launch of LSE 24 marks an important step in the evolution of our markets, providing clients with greater flexibility beyond traditional trading hours," said Julia Hoggett, CEO of LSE plc and head of digital and securities markets at LSEG.

The venue will run separately from the exchange's Main Market, which keeps its existing 08:00 to 16:30 hours. ETPs are the starting point given London's position as a leading international hub for the products, according to the exchange.

Digital Securities Depository to Support LSE 24 Infrastructure

LSE 24 will draw on LSEG's forthcoming Digital Securities Depository, which the group is developing to digitize issuance, settlement and asset servicing. LSEG intends to expand the depository across asset classes over time, according to TD Cowen analysts Lance Vitanza and Jonnathan Navarrete in a note shared with The Block.

The announcement's emphasis on agent-based trading workflows points to a shift in which execution and market access grow more software-driven, particularly during extended hours when human participation runs lower, according to TD Cowen.

NYSE Won Preliminary Approval for 22-Hour Trading Day

The move tracks a wider push among exchanges toward round-the-clock trading. In the United States, the New York Stock Exchange has won preliminary regulatory approval for a 22-hour trading day.

Some on Wall Street have warned that overnight sessions can be thinly traded and potentially destabilizing.

TD Cowen Analysts Interpret LSE 24 as Automation Step

TD Cowen argued the more consequential piece is what the venue signals about where market plumbing is heading. The extended hours are the headline, but the infrastructure play beneath them carries greater weight, the analysts wrote.

The analysts cautioned that the release does not suggest LSE 24 will replace existing market structures or move conventional securities trading onto blockchain-based infrastructure. Their read is that the venue is a step toward greater automation and increasingly digital post-trade infrastructure rather than a wholesale rebuild.
