According to Reuters, Meta offered rival AI chatbots in the European Economic Area (EEA) one month of free WhatsApp Business API access as part of efforts to settle an EU antitrust probe that could result in fines up to 10% of annual global turnover. The European Commission, which signaled in April that it may force access after Meta restricted WhatsApp to its own AI in January and then opened it to competitors for a fee in March, called the offer a step in the right direction and said it would use this window to discuss commitments with Meta that could avoid a finding of wrongdoing.
