MoonPay Launches Crypto Checkout App Inside ChatGPT

SOL-1.74%

MoonPay has launched a dedicated app inside ChatGPT that generates crypto checkout links on demand, allowing users to purchase tokens without leaving OpenAI's chatbot. The company announced the integration on X, positioning itself as the first and only crypto onramp integrated directly into ChatGPT. According to MoonPay, the feature closes a gap that has widened as users increasingly conduct financial research within the chatbot rather than across separate platforms and browser tabs.

How the ChatGPT Integration Works

The MoonPay app follows a three-step process: users search "MoonPay" in the ChatGPT Apps directory, connect the app, and buy any token. When a user types a request such as "Can we buy some Solana?" the app returns a checkout link. In MoonPay's demonstration, the response reads "Here's your SOL checkout link via MoonPay," followed by a "Buy Solana (SOL) — $50 checkout" link that opens outside the conversation. Users can adjust the purchase amount and select a wallet during checkout. The company tested the integration with Apple Pay and Solana.

Connecting the app displays a consent screen titled "Connect MoonPay" that describes the service as a way to buy crypto with a credit card. The screen informs users that ChatGPT shares basic information such as IP address and approximate location, along with a summary of recent context and intent. A toggle allows the chatbot to reference relevant memories and chats when sharing data with MoonPay.

MoonPay's Expanding AI-Driven Payment Strategy

The ChatGPT app represents part of a broader MoonPay initiative focused on AI-driven crypto tools. Earlier this month, MoonPay acquired AI trading startup Dawn Labs and launched Dawn CLI, a trading copilot that converts plain-English prompts into automated prediction-market strategies. The company previously released the MoonAgents Card, a virtual Mastercard enabling AI agents to spend stablecoins directly from crypto wallets at online merchants.

MoonPay Blockchain Engineer and Product Lead Kevin Arifin framed the ChatGPT app as a consumer education tool rather than an autonomous trading engine. He stated: "It's like a broker that sits by you, not making financial recommendations, but educating you about the asset you're buying. [It] makes ChatGPT the perfect place for that." Arifin noted that the gap in crypto purchasing capabilities within ChatGPT had been evident as users moved more financial research into the platform.

In February, MoonPay introduced MoonPay Agents, a non-custodial infrastructure layer that enables AI agents to create wallets and transact autonomously.
