New York Governor Signs First U.S. Statewide AI Data Center Ban for One Year

According to CNBC, on Tuesday, July 14, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order barring the construction of new large-scale data centers using 50 megawatts or more of power for up to one year, making New York the first state in the nation to impose such a ban. Hochul cited concerns over excessive power consumption and its impact on electricity costs, noting that New York's average residential electricity price has climbed nearly 68 percent since 2019. The governor stated that hyperscale AI data centers threaten the state's grid capacity and drive up costs for local residents.
