OpenAI Recruits 400+ Apple Employees, Including Hardware Chief Tang Tan

According to Beating and Apple's lawsuit filed recently, OpenAI has recruited over 400 Apple employees in a months-long talent competition. The departing staff span product design, display, antenna, supply chain, and hardware procurement divisions.

Tang Tan, OpenAI's hardware lead and former 25-year Apple veteran who oversaw iPhone development, has been identified as a key recruiter. OpenAI is preparing AI devices including a screenless smart speaker, glasses, recording devices, and wearable pins. Apple expressed concern that its talent and proprietary knowledge are being leveraged to build competitive hardware products. In response, Apple has begun offering salary increases and promotions to retain affected employees.
