According to OpenAI, on July 29, the company reset usage limits for all ChatGPT Work and Codex users following reports that GPT-5.6 Sol was consuming tokens faster than expected. Codex product lead Tibo announced the change on X. The investigation identified multiple causes: Sol performs longer operations, makes more tool calls, and consumes more tokens per reasoning step compared to prior models. OpenAI said it has completed optimizations and expects typical use cases to see approximately 18% improved usage efficiency. The company also acknowledged that "capability and efficiency improvements don't always move in parallel," and that real-world usage patterns sometimes reveal issues that internal testing cannot predict.
