Qualcomm Acquires Modular to Challenge NVIDIA's CUDA Dominance, Expected to Close H2 2026

Qualcomm announced its acquisition of Modular, a company developing an open-source native AI software platform designed to break NVIDIA's proprietary CUDA ecosystem dominance. The deal, expected to close in the second half of 2026, aims to combine Modular's hardware-neutral software stack with Qualcomm's chip capabilities to enable developers to write AI code once and deploy across CPUs, GPUs, NPUs, and custom ASICs without modification.

Modular's platform focuses on cross-platform efficiency and reduced total cost of ownership for enterprises deploying AI from edge devices to data centers. The acquisition will strengthen Qualcomm's software strategy for edge computing and data center markets, supporting the deployment of generative and agentic AI across heterogeneous hardware environments while fostering an open developer ecosystem independent of any single hardware vendor.
