Russia's Digital Ruble Launches September 1, Central Bank Ready for Widespread Use

According to state-owned Russian media, Russia's digital ruble is ready for widespread use by September 1, with major banks and retailers prepared to accept it, Bank of Russia Governor Elvira Nabiullina said this week. "Technologically, everything is ready; we've done a lot of preparatory work," Nabiullina said during the Central Bank Financial Conference. The rollout follows a law passed last July mandating that systemically important banks accept the digital currency by the September 1 deadline. However, an independent report from The Moscow Times suggests there is "not significant public interest," citing a survey finding that Russian citizens "do not understand why they need a third form of money" beyond cash and non-cash options.
