Samsung to Invest $17.3 Billion in South Korea Chip Expansion Across Four Regions

According to Yicai, Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong announced that Samsung Group would invest 26.6 trillion won ($17.3 billion) in South Korea for semiconductor expansion. The investment includes 20.3 trillion won ($13.2 billion) for a semiconductor cluster in the Seoul metropolitan area spanning Pyeongtaek and Yongin, 4.3 trillion won ($2.76 billion) for the Honam region including a 4 trillion won ($2.6 billion) wafer fabrication plant in Gwangju, 1.4 trillion won ($910 million) for the Chungcheong region covering high-bandwidth memory, display, battery and substrate projects, and 600 billion won ($390 million) for the Yeongnam region.

Samsung's allocation to HBM projects follows its competition with SK hynix, which holds 62% of the HBM market as of Q2 2025, compared to Samsung's 17%.
