Saudi Arabia Rejects U.S. Military Request, Halts 100-Aircraft Strait Operation This Spring

According to the Wall Street Journal, this spring Saudi Arabia refused to provide military bases and airspace for a planned U.S. operation involving over 100 aircraft aimed at securing shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz. The refusal forced the U.S. to cancel the operation, which had been launched by Trump to ensure safe passage of vessels. U.S. officials revealed that the White House threatened to suspend deliveries of interceptors used to counter Iranian missiles and drones if Saudi Arabia did not reverse its position. Saudi Arabia ultimately conceded, though U.S. officials stated the resulting damage would be difficult to repair.
