South Korea's KOSPI Market Hits 34 Trading Halts in 6 Months, Surpassing 2008 Crisis Levels

According to Korea Exchange, South Korea's KOSPI market experienced 34 sidecar halts from January 2 to July 10, 2026—surpassing the 26 halts recorded during the entire 2008 global financial crisis. The market also triggered six circuit breakers during the same period, accounting for half of the 12 circuit breakers activated since the mechanism's introduction in 2000. Forced liquidation of individual investor stock positions reached 142.2 billion won on July 9, the highest level in a month, according to the Financial Investment Association.
