South Korea's Massive Chip Worker Bonuses Trigger Central Bank Inflation Alert

According to a Bank of Korea report on June 17, massive bonuses paid to workers at SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are raising inflation concerns. SK Hynix employees are expected to receive bonuses exceeding 700 million won ($454,851), while Samsung chip workers are projected to receive around 626 million won ($410,000) this year. The BOK warned that when such "special bonuses expand unusually and substantially," wage growth could spread to other sectors, significantly increasing inflationary pressures amid already above-target inflation projections of 2.7% for the year.

Retail businesses are already capitalizing on the spending surge. Luxury sales at a Shinsegae department store in Gyeonggi Province surged 53.6% year-on-year, with luxury jewelry jumping 146.3% and watches up 85.3%. Major department store stocks have rallied sharply, with Shinsegae gaining 190% year to date and Lotte Shopping up 148%.
