UK Regulator Ofgem Weighs Mandatory Power Cuts for Data Centers During Peak Demand

According to Bloomberg, on June 16, UK energy regulator Ofgem is evaluating whether to require data centers to reduce electricity consumption during periods of high system stress. The move is part of Britain's response to surging power demand driven by rapid growth in artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure.

Ofgem stated in its latest policy update that it is considering introducing mandatory load-shedding as a backup mechanism within its regulatory framework. The regulator believes that more effective load management for large power consumers would provide greater flexibility to the grid, enabling it to accommodate increased electricity demand while maintaining supply reliability.
