U.S. Demands All Ships in Strait of Hormuz Comply With Military Orders as India Protests Death of Three Sailors

According to the U.S. State Department, Secretary of State Rubio told Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on June 14 that all commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz "should immediately comply with U.S. military orders." Rubio emphasized that violations of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports and illegal transport of Iranian oil "will not be tolerated." The call followed a U.S. military strike on a tanker earlier this week in the critical waterway that killed three Indian sailors, prompting New Delhi to formally protest the incident.

Jaishankar stated he "reiterated India's strong protest" against the strike, calling such "deadly actions against commercial shipping unreasonable."
