U.S., EU, and UK Sanction Russian Cybercriminal Stern Over $300M Trickbot Ransomware Operations

According to ChainCatcher, the U.S., EU, and UK jointly imposed sanctions on Russian cybercriminal Vitaly Nikolayevich Kovalev, alias "Stern," identified as a core administrator of the Trickbot Group ransomware operation. Chain analysis revealed that wallet addresses linked to Stern received over $300 million in ransom payments, potentially making him the largest-scale ransomware operator identified to date. Stern held a CEO-like role within Trickbot, overseeing budget management, personnel recruitment, infrastructure procurement, and attack planning. The operation managed multiple ransomware variants including Conti, Ryuk, Diavol, Karakurt, Royal, and Quantum.
