U.S. Small Business Hiring Plans Fall to Six-Year Low in May, Down 4 Percentage Points

According to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), U.S. small business hiring intentions and job opening rates both fell to six-year lows in May. Seasonally adjusted, 9% of small business owners plan to add jobs in the next three months, down 4 percentage points from April, while the share of firms reporting they cannot fill job openings declined 5 percentage points to 29%. Both metrics reached their lowest levels since May 2020.
