According to state media reports, Vietnam’s national oil company urged the U.S. Navy to allow a supertanker to pass through an American naval blockade near the Persian Gulf on May 12. The Agios Fanourios I, a very large crude carrier operated by Athens-based East Mediterranean Shipping, reversed course Monday near the blockade line after transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel was carrying 1.99 million barrels of Iraqi Basra medium crude oil loaded in Iraq before turning back. Vietnam’s state oil company confirmed to U.S. Naval Central Command that it owns the cargo, which is destined for Dung Quat, a Vietnamese refinery.
