According to the World Meteorological Organization, on May 18, the agency released its 2025 climate report for Latin America and the Caribbean, documenting record-breaking temperatures, persistent droughts, extreme rainfall, and tropical cyclones impacting the region. Mexico’s Mexicali city reached 52.7 degrees Celsius, setting a national record, while multiple Central American locations exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. Extreme heat causes approximately 13,000 deaths annually in the region.
