A police report seen by the San Francisco Chronicle revealed that last Saturday morning, a man impersonating a delivery person robbed a San Francisco homeowner of Crypto Assets worth $11 million at gunpoint. He first pulled out a gun and then bound the victim with tape.

The suspect used the identity of a delivery person to enter the house, then brandished a weapon, subdued the homeowner, and forced them to hand over the Crypto Assets wallet credentials, a laptop, and a mobile phone.

The report states that the attack occurred around 6:45 AM, at a residence located near the intersection of 18th Street and Dolores Street in the Mission Dolores neighborhood of San Francisco.

This incident marks the latest case in the recent surge of “wrench attacks” (i.e., personal attacks) against Crypto Assets holders. Security researchers warn that the incidence of such crimes is on the rise this year. The report did not provide any details regarding casualties or arrests.

Cybercrime consultant David Sehyeon Baek stated that investigators may “simultaneously act on three fronts: devices, the blockchain, and victim profiling, rather than choosing one aspect and ignoring the others.”

“In the initial 24 to 72 hours, they will focus on addressing hardware-related issues,” Baek explained, noting that authorities may attempt to track the stolen phones and laptops, while ensuring the safety of the remaining assets in the exchange before the attackers can move the assets. He added, “Meanwhile, they will work to identify the exact wallets and addresses involved so that blockchain experts can track the flow of funds in real-time.” (Decrypt)
