Most knockoff coins have already fallen by more than 80%. So, do altcoins in the crypto market still exist?
First, take a look at two key indicators:
① Bitcoin Dominance: around 58%, still at a high level.
This means funds are mainly concentrated in Bitcoin and a small number of mainstream assets, putting overall pressure on altcoins. Historically, altcoin seasons often only start when BTC dominance clearly drops back to below 50–55%
② Altcoin Season Index: currently 34.
When the index is below 75, it’s considered a “Bitcoin season”; you need 75% or more to count as entering an altcoin season. We still are nowhere near that
Will this altcoin season turn out to be a letdown like in 2025? Let’s first look at a few market changes:
① Market structure changes: the cycle previously driven by retail investors’ high-leverage speculation is weakening. Institutional funds (ETFs, DAT digital asset vaults) are more inclined toward BTC and high-quality assets, and liquidity is concentrated in a small number of coins. In 2025, the “altcoin season” expectation failed, shifting to a liquidation season—many projects keep bleeding due to unlocking pressure and high-inflation issuance.
② Liquidity rotation with layered preferences: liquidity does not surge in all at once; it first flows from BTC → ETH → a few high-quality altcoins with narratives (such as AI, RWA, meme). Projects with small market caps or without solid fundamentals are easier to abandon
③ Macroeconomic and external factors: the high-interest-rate environment, economic anxiety, geopolitical risks, and so on make retail investors cautious and unwilling to load up on high-risk altcoins. Threats like quantum computing and regulation also affect long-term expectations.
So, in summary, opportunities do exist, but the risk is extremely high. Opportunities will concentrate in sectors with real narratives, strong fundamentals, or institutional interest. Altcoins will still exist and remain active, but the market has evolved—from a nationwide frenzy to professional filtering. In 2026, it will be more like an institution-led structural market rather than the hot season driven by retail investors in the past
So, which altcoins are you still bullish on?
