Just realized a lot of new traders don't actually understand what PNL means, and honestly it's costing them real money. So let me break this down because it's actually simpler than people think.
PNL stands for Profit and Loss. That's it. But here's where most people get confused: there are two types and they work very differently.
First, unrealized PNL. This is the money you haven't actually made yet. Say you grabbed some ETH at 3,000 and it's now sitting at 2,130. You're up 130 on paper, but it's not real until you hit that sell button. I see so many people get emotional about unrealized gains and then panic sell when the price dips. Don't fall for that trap.
Realized PNL is when you actually close the position. You sold, the trade is done, and now that profit or loss is locked in. This is what actually matters for your account balance.
Now, today's PNL is something I check constantly. It's literally the sum of everything you made or lost just today. Green means you're up, red means you're bleeding. And right now the market is actually moving pretty nicely.
Look at what's happening with the major pairs. Bitcoin is sitting around 69.13K, up 2.93% today. Ethereum pushing 2.13K with a solid 3.52% gain. Even BNB is showing strength at 601.10, up 1.14%. These are the kinds of days where understanding your PNL meaning becomes crucial because moves are happening in real time.
Here's the thing about tracking your daily PNL: it's not just about ego checking if you're winning or losing. It's about pattern recognition. You start seeing when you make your best trades, what time of day works for you, which pairs treat you well. That data is gold.
I honestly think more traders would be profitable if they actually paid attention to their PNL instead of just watching the charts. It forces you to be honest about your decisions. Did you take profits too early? Hold too long? FOMO into a pump? Your PNL tells the story.
So yeah, next time you're trading, stop and actually look at your PNL. Understand what the numbers are telling you. It's the difference between trading emotionally and trading with a system.
