American Student Charged for Alleged Iran Spying, Received $1,379 in Crypto

According to CNN and an indictment filed by Israel's State Attorney's Office on July 3, an American student living in Jerusalem was charged with spying for Iran in exchange for cryptocurrency. The ultra-Orthodox seminary student allegedly responded to a job posting on Telegram while visiting his family in the United States in November 2025. After returning to Israel, Iranian intelligence agents assigned him tasks including taking photographs and videos, paying him in cryptocurrency. The suspect received approximately $1,379 in crypto payments from two Iranian agents before he blocked contact. Israeli authorities arrested him on June 9 on two counts of contact with a foreign agent and 14 counts of communicating information to the enemy.
