Bytedance Developing Custom CPUs Amid AI Infrastructure Demand, Chip Prices Up 10%-35% Quarterly

According to Reuters, Bytedance is developing proprietary CPUs on May 28 to meet its growing artificial intelligence infrastructure needs as chip prices surge and supply shortages persist. The company is pursuing two CPU architecture pathways—one based on Arm architecture and another on the open-source RISC-V instruction set—to evaluate which design better suits its long-term data center requirements. Currently sourcing CPUs from Intel and AMD, Bytedance faces quarterly price increases between 10% and 35%, prompting the company to accelerate its internal chip development as an alternative.
