According to Caixin, on June 11, a Chinese cryptocurrency businesswoman was defrauded of over $9.4 million (approximately 60 million yuan) in the United States. The victim, identified as Lü, is the CEO of an algorithm technology company in southwest China whose mining pool once accounted for approximately 9% of global Bitcoin hash rate. The scam was orchestrated by two brothers posing as members of Middle East royalty; the older brother claimed to be a "royal son-in-law" with connections to Saudi Arabia's defense minister, while the younger impersonated a hedge fund manager after watching the HBO series "Billions." The perpetrators allegedly also manipulated a local Cleveland official to convince the victim to sign a cryptocurrency mining development contract.
