Coinbase Premium Index Turns Negative for 40 Days; U.S. PCE Inflation Hits 4.1% YoY

According to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, Coinbase Premium Index has remained negative for 40 consecutive days since May 15, signaling sustained selling pressure from institutional investors. Data from the U.S. in May showed PCE inflation rose 4.1% year-over-year, exceeding the expected 4.0%, while core PCE climbed 3.4% against the expected 3.3%—both marking the highest levels since April 2023. GDP growth reached 2.1%, surpassing forecasts, leaving the Federal Reserve facing difficult policy decisions. Darkfost noted that near-term monetary easing prospects remain limited, with rate hikes returning to consideration, reinforcing institutional risk-averse sentiment.
