DOJ Plans to Drop Charges Against BitClub Ponzi Mastermind Matthew Goettsche in $722M Case

According to people familiar with the matter, the U.S. Department of Justice is planning to drop charges against Matthew Goettsche, the alleged mastermind of the BitClub Network Ponzi scheme. Prosecutors alleged the crypto mining operation operated as a $722 million fraud dating back to a 2019 indictment. The dismissal would be made with prejudice, preventing the government from bringing the same charges again. Three co-defendants in the case previously pleaded guilty, including Joseph Frank Abel, who in 2020 admitted to involvement in the BitClub scheme and to offering and selling unregistered securities.
