Gemini Surpasses ChatGPT in App Market Share to 25% Since Early 2026, Driven by Nano Banana and Gemini 3

According to researcher Yu Shunyu from Google DeepMind, Gemini’s app market share has reached approximately 25% since early 2026, surpassing ChatGPT’s decline from 69% to 45%. The reversal was driven by the viral image generation product Nano Banana, which generated large app downloads, followed by Gemini 3’s release that retained users.

Internally, Google has reorganized its AI research structure. Pretraining has become a well-defined engineering project leveraging Google’s strong management capabilities, while post-training remains exploratory due to higher uncertainty.
