India Expands Domestic Crude Exploration Across 250,000 Sq Km to Reduce Import Dependency

According to India's petroleum ministry, on July 6, the government is expanding domestic crude oil exploration to reduce energy import reliance. Oil and Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told AFP that India is currently tendering exploration rights for approximately 250,000 square kilometers of unexplored regions. India's domestic crude output in fiscal year 2025 (April 2024–March 2025) was 26.98 million tons, equivalent to 522,000 barrels per day—less than 10% of national demand and significantly below the 2011 peak of over 900,000 barrels daily. To diversify supply amid regional strait constraints, India has expanded crude suppliers from 27 to 41 countries, including Iran and Venezuela, while increasing purchases from Russia and African nations.
