India Temporarily Bans Telegram for One Week Over Exam Answer Leaks, Affecting 150M Users

According to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, India's IT ministry has imposed a one-week ban on Telegram through June 22 due to the leakage of answers for the NEET UG 2026 entrance exam, affecting approximately 150 million users. Durov stated the ban fails to address the core issue, as leaked content merely migrates to other platforms. Telegram said it has deleted hundreds of channels distributing exam leaks and related scams over recent weeks and strengthened visibility of the "edited" label to prevent backdated fraud.
