UK Bans Social Media for Under-16s, Including TikTok and Snapchat, Effective Spring 2027

According to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement today (June 15), the UK government has imposed a full ban on social media for under-16s, describing it as a "big moment for the country." The ban will cover platforms including Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X, with enforcement scheduled to begin in Spring 2027 pending regulation approval before Christmas 2026. Messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal will be exempt, as will YouTube Kids and Google Classroom. The government will also introduce additional restrictions on livestreaming and stranger communication features for under-16s across online services, and is considering overnight curfews and infinite scrolling limits for those under 18, with further details expected in July.
