Iraq and Pakistan Sign Energy Transit Agreements with Iran on May 13, Enabling Oil and LNG Transport

GateNews

According to Reuters, Iraq and Pakistan have reached agreements with Iran on May 13, allowing both countries to transport oil and liquefied natural gas through the Persian Gulf region, demonstrating Tehran’s control over energy flows via the Strait of Hormuz.

An Iraqi Oil Ministry official said Iraq is seeking Iranian approval for additional transit routes, as the government aims to protect oil revenues that account for 95% of its budget. Separately, two industry sources confirmed that under a bilateral agreement between Islamabad and Tehran, two tankers carrying Qatari liquefied natural gas are heading to Pakistan. Both Iraq and Pakistan have not made direct payments to Iran or its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the transit arrangements.
