According to recent statements, SpaceX plans to establish a permanent lunar base within ten years and achieve human landing on Mars within five years, marking a significant acceleration of space colonization ambitions. Musk revealed that the company aims to send initial supply missions to the Moon and Mars by year-end as preparation.

The strategy unfolds in two phases: first, establishing a long-term lunar settlement by 2036 with capabilities for scientific research and deep-space logistics; second, pursuing crewed Mars missions to build a permanent human presence on the red planet. SpaceX plans to conduct uncrewed tests of Starship's lunar lander variant before 2028 crewed missions, then deploy over 100 Starship cargo flights during 2030–2033 to construct lunar infrastructure including solar power systems, water recycling, and resource production facilities.
