OpenAI Executives Bill Peebles and Kevin Weil Depart in Leadership Reshuffle

Gate News message, April 18 — OpenAI executives Bill Peebles and Kevin Weil announced their departures on April 17 via X posts, marking the latest in a series of recent leadership changes at the company.

The company said it is decentralizing OpenAI for Science to move its work closer to teams building models, products, and infrastructure. Weil, who joined OpenAI in 2024, launched OpenAI for Science, while Peebles, who joined in 2023, led Sora before the company shut down the video application last month to manage costs and reallocate compute resources.

These departures follow product and business chief Fidji Simo’s medical leave, marketing chief Kate Rouch’s decision to step down, and COO Brad Lightcap’s transition to a “special projects” role.
