OpenAI Introduces GPT-Red to Strengthen GPT-5.6 Against Prompt Injection Attacks

According to OpenAI, the company introduced GPT-Red, an automated AI red-teaming system, on Wednesday to identify vulnerabilities in language models before deployment. GPT-Red was used to train GPT-5.6, reducing failures on prompt injection benchmarks. OpenAI said GPT-Red succeeded in 84% of internal evaluation scenarios, compared with 13% for human red teamers in the same tests. The system operates through self-play reinforcement learning, generating progressively stronger attacks while defender models learn to resist them. OpenAI stated that GPT-Red will remain an internal tool due to its intentionally developed offensive capabilities.
